IP telephony market in ‘strong’ says IDC
15/07/08
A new report from IDC says that 31 million shipments of IP telephony
lines in 2007 reflect a strong market and, despite the popularity of
unified communications solutions, UC products have not affected IP
telephony line growth
The world IP PBX market was led by four vendors – Cisco Avaya,
Nortel and Siemens – according to IDC, based on the companies’
results for 2007 end-user revenue last year.
In the IP PBX market, Cisco gained the most market share while
Alcatel-Lucent lost the most market share relative to 2006, the IDC
report says.
The other IP PBX vendors had nominal changes in market share
year-over-year. In particular, Cisco led the market for IP phones,
DIC says, and Alcatel-Lucent saw the highest decline in
year-over-year market share.
IDC says the IP PBX market is facing some serious threats, including
desktop collaborative environments, open source solutions and hosted
VoIP services. Yet UC Mobility solutions are the primary threat to
desktop IP phones, IDC says.
To address the threat, the firm recommends that IP PBX vendors
“solidify their relationship with Microsoft and IBM, putting further
emphasis on communications expertise and solutions as well as
building an ISV ecosystem to help software developers build
applications on their telephony platform.”
The report also says that IP phone vendors should take a closer look
at desktop phones, and assess just how clients’ adoption of UC
software will affect them.
